The wines of
Shannon, Elgin
South
Africa revisited part 21: Shannon, a new producer from Elgin
Website:
www.shannonwines.com
A
family run winery, Shannon is owned by James and Stuart Downes.
They
planted their vineyards and sold grapes to top producers for the
first 8 years, while they were researching how to proceed. Now they
are in the second vintage of making their own wines. James is,
apparently, the neatest, most precise farmer you could imagine.
The
vineyard consists of 12 different blocks of Pinot Noir, 7 blocks of
Sauvignon Blanc, small amounts of Semillon and Viognier, and a
Merlot vineyard planted with five different clones, from both France
and Italy.
THE
WINES
Shannon
Sauvignon Blanc 2009 Elgin
15% Semillon is used to fatten out the mid palate. Taut, crisp
nose is fresh, mineral and focused. There are some citrus and
grapefruit notes. The palate is lively with lovely chalky, mineral,
rapefruit character. Very stylish and focused with some fruit
richness and a spicy mineral finish. Lovely purity. 92/100
Shannon
Rockview Pinot Noir 2008 Elgin
Unusual nose. Cherries, berries and herbs with some savoury soy
sauce and spice notes. The palate is savoury and taut with herb and
dark cherry notes, as well as some undergrowth character. Savoury,
with a tangy finish. 86/100
Shannon
Mount Bullet 2008
This is a varietal Merlot from five different clones. Lovely
sweet, pure berry fruit nose with some spiciness. Very seductive.
The palate is sweet, lush, ripe and pure with spicy minerality under
the fruit and subtle chalkiness. A serious wine. 93/100
