Four from Vernon Wines

Four wines from wineanorak sponsor Vernon Wines, who stock a small-ish but high quality list of estate bottled Italian wines. Their website can be found at www.vernonwines.co.uk

Ornella Molon Pinot Grigio 2002 Piave
The full herby nose has a hint of toast and some waxy, straw notes. The palate shows savoury, chunky fruit – it’s herby with a touch of minerality. A tasty, savoury white with nice acidity. Very good+ 89/100 (£6.45)

Campo San Trovaso Prosecco VSQPRD
An attractive sparkling wine. Fresh, slightly bready yeasty nose. Nice balance on the fresh, vivid palate. Not massively full flavoured but brilliantly drinkable. Very good+ 86/100 (£7.65)

Castello di Cacchiano 1999 Chianti Classico
Ripe nose with a smoky, slightly tarry edge to the fruit. The palate shows a nice density of spicy fruit with assertive tannic structure and good acidity. Quite traditional in style, this is a very effective food wine. Very good+ 88/100 (£9.58)

Felline ‘Albarello’ Rosso di Salento 2001
Roasted tarry, spicy nose with rich chocolatey fruit. The palate is rich and tarry with good acidity and a distinctive spicy character. Firm tannins and nice balancing acidity. Satisfying stuff with good food compatibility. A bargain. Very good+ 88/100 (£5.81)
