The wines of Telmo Rodriguez, Spain

UK agent: Adnams (wines@adnams.co.uk)

Telmo Rodriguez is one of Spain’s most celebrated winemakers. As well as looking after the wines at family property Remelluri (in Rioja), he’s making a wide range of wines from all over Spain under his own name. These are tremendously appealing wines: they are modern, but still show regional typicity, they are beautifully packaged, and they offer value for money. They’re available from Adnams in the UK. Spain needs more Telmos.

Compañia de Vinos de Telmo Rodriguez Basa 2003 Rueda Blanco
This deliciously fresh white shows a grassy nose which leads to an expressive, modern fruit palate. Very good+ 88/100 (£6.03)

Telmo Rodriguez Almuvedre 2003 Alicante
Bright, juicy modern glugger of a red wine with cherry and herb fruit. Beaujolais style and very well done. Very good+ 87/100 (£5.03)

Telmo Rodriguez Viña 105 2002 Cigales
Forward modern fruit with a spicy twist. The palate is spicy and full with nice fruit quality. Delicious glugger but some interest here too. Very good+ 89/100 (£6.50)

Telmo Rodriguez LZ 2003 Rioja
Forward spicy fruits on the nose. Lovely rich, soft spicy palate which is elegant with great fruit quality and a nice spiciness. Another delicious wine. Very good+ 88/100 (£6.49)

Telmo Rodriguez Dehesa Gago 2003 Toro
Deep coloured. Dense, rich tarry spicy nose, dominated by forward black fruits. The palate is soft and rich with a spicy, minerally character to the rich fruit. Dense and satisfying. Very good/excellent 91/100 (£7.29)

Telmo Rodriguez Lanzaga 2001 Rioja
Quite elegant spicy, fresh black fruit nose. Spicy palate with good concentration of dense, herb-tinged tarry fruit. Modern and delicious, with some oak evident. Very good/excellent 90/100 (£10.99)

Telmo Rodriguez Pegaso 1999 Barrancos de Pizzara
Dense spicy nose. The palate is chewy and concentrated with a nice minerally undercurrent to the dense red fruits. Spicy finish, and potential for the future. Very good/excellent 90/100 (£14.99)

Telmo Rodriguez MR Moscatel 2003 Malaga
This sweet white is very aromatic with a fresh grapey nose. The palate is soft, concentrated and rich-textured. Smooth, sweet and perhaps just a little cloying. Very good+ 88/100

Telmo Rodriguez Molino Real 2002 Mountain Wine, Malaga
Expressive, complex and rich with a grapey, spicy edge to the nose. The palate is very concentrated and sweet, but with enough acid to hold it together. Very good/excellent 91/100
