Fourth-growth Château Talbot is a large property in the
heart of St Julien, with 104 ha of vines. It has a reputation for
refinement and consistency, and is now run by the late Jean
Cordier’s two daughters. Production levels of 330 000 bottles of the
first wine and 260 000 bottles of reliable second wine Connetable de
Talbot mean that there’s plenty for everyone.
Château Talbot 1996, Saint-Julien
A classic style; not a blockbuster. The nose is quite evolved and
shows lovely leafy, cedary fruit with a pronounced mineral edge.
Lovely balance on the palate. Drinking well now but still showing some
savoury tannic structure on the finish, suggesting it could evolve yet
further. Very good excellent.
Château Talbot 1998, Saint-Julien
There’s quite an assertive roast coffee note to the nose, with
some savoury spicy character. The palate is dense, spicy and angular.
Quite a firm tannic wine without too much charm at the moment. Good
concentration, though, and it will be interesting to track how this
develops. Very good+
Château Talbot Caillou
Blanc 2000, Saint-Julien
There are six hectares of white grapes at the property; 84%
Sauvugnon Blanc, 16% Semillon. Subtle, grassy, slightly herbal nose is
bright, and leads to a crisp, full flavoured palate. Tasty, but quite
youthful at the moment. Very good
