Overall a pretty consistent performance here. Generally the
wines are on the drier, crisper end of the spectrum, and it’s a
style I’m keen on: they aren’t ‘light’ wines, but show good
concentration and a core of minerally acidity that keeps things well
in balance. This is least successful with the Grand Cru Riesling,
which is overly lean, but works well with the naturally richer
varieties such as Tokay Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer.
Pinot Blanc 2000
Intense nose is quite rich, even a little bready in character,
with some waxy notes and a lemony edge. The palate is full flavoured,
savoury and dry with lots of character and good balance. Very good+
Muscat 2000
Quite a lively, floral aromatic nose with a sweet edge. The palate
is full flavoured, bone dry and quite fruity. Attractive, accessible
stuff. Very good+
Tokay Pinot Gris Vieilles Vignes 2000
Quite shy on the nose. It’s at the fresher end of the spectrum
of Pinot Gris, with crisp acidity bracing the naturally rich texture
of the grape. There’s a slightly sweet edge to the spicy palate, but
it’s quite a dry style. Very good
Gewürztraminer 2000
Fresh lemony, floral edge to the nose, with an underlying
muskiness. Full flavoured, rich palate is still in balance: the
spicy-edged acidity helps. Finishes dry. Lovely example of this grape.
Very good+
Riesling Grand Cru Florimont 1999
Rich, expressive lime and mineral nose with a piercing acid edge.
Palate is austerely dry with very high acidity (perhaps too dry?).
Lots of bracing limey fruit. Impressive concentration but so acidic
… perhaps this will improve and evolve. Very good+
Tokay Pinot Gris Grand Cru Florimont 2000
Slightly muted nose with a touch of lemony fruit. Very rich, full
textured, concentrated palate with a spicy acid finish. Lovely savoury
edge and nice balancing sweetness. This is a complex food wine that
will no doubt evolve. Very good/excellent
Gewürztraminer Grand cru Pfersiberg 2000
Pretty grapey, musky nose is quite rich, and leads to a fat palate
with a lemony edge. High acidity provides balance: despite the
considerable residual sugar, this still finishes dry. Lovely. Very
good/excellent
Riesling Selection de Grains Nobles 1997
Intense, spicy, limey nose with a marmaladey edge. Complex. The
rich, thick textured palate shows plenty of botrytis character.
There’s good balance here – always important in sweet wines –
with good acidity. Not overpoweringly sweet. Very good/excellent
