Pighin produces wines from two vineyard areas: the Risano vineyard in the Grave del Friuli area and Caprivo vineyard in the Collio area, with two separate wineries.  There are an impressive 150 ha of vineyards in Risano, and a further 30 ha in the Caprivo, so this is a sizeable operation.

These wines are well made, in a fresh, modern style. They are good examples of what Friuli can produce. If I’m going to be critical, at around £10 a bottle retail I’d really be expecting just a touch more concentration and complexity, but maybe I’m being too fussy here.

As well as the wines tasted here, Pighin also make a Chardonnay, a Picolit and a Cabernet, as well as some fizzes.

Pinot Grigio Grave del Friuli 2001, Friuli
Very modern, showing bright fruit that’s slightly spicy with a boiled sweets edge. The crisp, bright palate is still quite tanky. Clean and crisp. Good/very good

Pinot Grigio del Collio 2001, Friuli
The crisp, fresh spicy nose is quite light. The palate is crisp with some rounded texture and a touch of varietal character. Quite pleasant. Good/very good

Sauvignon Grave del Friuli 2001, Friuli
Quite an assertive crisp nose, showing grassy, leafy character. Lean fresh palate displays good acidity. Attractive in a light style. Very good

Merlot Grave Riserva 1999, Friuli
The nose displays pure cherry, raspberry and blackcurrant fruit with a leafy edge. Very ‘cool climate’. Midweight juicy berry fruit on the palate is nicely savoury.
