A producer I first came across in my visit to the Douro
in 2002. At the time I was impressed with their wines, and it was nice
to do some catch-up here. A high-quality, small-scale negociant
operation established in 2001, this is a collaboration between Luís
Soares Duarte, Francisco Ferreira (of Vallado)
and Rui Moreira.
Esboço Branco 2004 Douro
The first vintage of their white, this is nice, fresh, rounded and
fruity. It’s a crisp white wine with some richness to the fruit. A
blend of Malvasia Fino, Cerceal and Gouveio. Very good+ 88/100
Esboço 2002 Douro
A difficult year in the region. This is a blend of 45% Tinta Roriz,
35% Touriga Franca and 15% Touriga Nacional. Very bright fruit on the
nose, with a freshness to the red berry fruit. The palate is vivid and
intense with fresh, savoury fruit. Nice weight. Typical of many of the
Douro 02s, but well done.
Kolheita 2001 Douro
The top wine, this wasn’t made in 2002. It’s made from a
single vineyard with old vines. 100% lagares, destemmed, and 13 months
in new French oak (Allier – Cadus and Demy). Full-on spicy nose with
well defined red and black fruits. There are some classy oak notes.
The palate is structured yet supple with lots of vivid spicy fruit.
Made in a modern style: a fair bit of oak but lots of flavour. Very
good/excellent 91/100
