In just a short time, Jorge Moreira (pictured) has established a reputation for himself as one of the Douro’s leading young winemakers. His vineyards are predominantly north facing, and in his winemaking he aims at wines that are fresh, balanced and with good acidity. 2001 was the inaugural vintage here. Just one wine is made, and in 2004 some 14 000 bottles were produced.

Of the 2004 vintage generally, Jorge says, ‘it has lots of concentration but also lots of freshness too’, and he describes it as his favourite Douro vintage since 1996.

Poeira 2001
Smooth, fresh, dark fruits nose is beautifully perfumed, focused and tight, with some spiciness. The palate is concentrated, smooth and elegant showing red fruits, fresh structure and good acidity. Lots of structure and concentration, yet still fresh. A brilliant effort that reminds me of the 2001 in style, but with perhaps a bit more staying power. Excellent 95/100
