I'm generally quite a
fan of Austrian whites, and if you aren't familiar with them, Bründlmayer
is a good producer to start with. It's a family-owned estate with
around 60 ha of vines around the town of Langenlois in Austria’s
Kamptal. Willi Bründlmayer has managed the estate since 1980. Quality
is high and both the Grüner Veltliners and the Rieslings are
recommended. As with other Austrian wines the UK availability isn’t
great: try www.wine-searcher.com
or contact UK agents Richards Walford for more information (01780 460

Grüner Veltliner
Langenloiser Burg-Vogelsang 2001
Quite a fresh, fruity nose with an attractive herby edge. Nice
texture on the dry palate which is quite savoury with good intensity
and a peppery edge. Very good+
Grüner Veltliner
Alte Reben 2000
Made from 50 year old vines, fermented in old 300 litre barrels
and then transferred to 2500 litre casks. Subtle, gently herbal nose
with some peppery notes. The palate displays a good density of savoury
fruit. Very dry with good concentration and a nice spicy finish. Very
good+
Grüner
Veltliner Ried Käferberg 2000 Langenlois, Kamptal, Austria
From a
vineyard with clay soil, and harvested late, this impressive Gruner
Veltliner weighs in at a heady 15% alcohol. The nose shows lovely
ripe, sweet herbal fruit with a lemony lift. The palate is rich
textured and complex, with a spicy finish and a lovely fat texture.
Very full bodied and finishes dry. Very good/excellent
Riesling Langenloiser Steinmassel 2001
Lovely rich expressive nose showing spicy citrus fruit: quite perfumed.
Good acidity on the crisp, savoury palate which has a good density of
savoury fruit. Very dry. Very good/excellent
Riesling Zöbinger Heiligenstein 2000
Lovely sweet perfumed nose with limey, floral
notes and a touch of honey. Rich, sweet lime-edged palate. Delicious
stuff: very complex, and with some sweetness on the finish even though
this is a dry style. Very good/excellent
Riesling Zöbinger Heiligenstein Alte Reben 2000
From 50 year old vines. Knockout sweet perfumed nose is very complex and
leads to a concentrated palate that’s nicely poised, displaying
sweet limey fruit and balancing acidity. A delicious, expressive
Riesling that is still nicely poised despite its size. Some sweetness
but finishes dry. Very good/excellent
