The Loire
is an interesting region, with a vast range of wines that differ in
terms of both style and quality. The general standard varies almost
alarmingly, but the wines from the best producers, in good vintages,
are fantastic. Baumard is a leading property in Anjou
with a reputation for fantastic Savennières and sweet wines of
Coteaux du Layon, although other wines are also made. I was bowled
over by the quality, with the star of the show the great Quarts de
Chaume.
Carte Corail Brut NV
From Cabernet Franc grapes, so it’s a Blanc de Noir. Very zesty
with high acidity. Fresh, clean and strikingly acidity. Very good+
85/100
Savennières Clos du Papillon 1999
This vineyard is shared with two other growers. Lovely Chenin
nose: herbs, straw, lemony freshness and a bit of ripe cheese. The
palate is rounded and fruity with some nice herby, savoury complexity.
Great balance and lots of complexity. Very good/excellent 91/100 (£13.25
Lay & Wheeler)
Savennières Clos du Papillon 2001
Fragrant, aromatic cheesy, straw nose. The palate is quite savoury
and intense with a distinctive limey edge. Very youthful and bold,
this needs time. Very good/excellent 91/100
Savennières 2000
Quite an aromatic herb and straw nose which is fragrant, with a
lifted acid edge. The palate is intense and concentrated with lovely
savoury straw-like character. Lovely intensity and good acidity. Very
good/excellent 92/100
Quarts de Chaume 2001
Quite brilliant. Lovely complex herby nose which is sweet and
intense. Some apricot notes. The palate is viscous and complex with a
distinctive herby character. Lovely Canteloupe melon fruit. Very sweet
and intense. Very good/excellent 93/100
