As I found out on a recent
visit, the Alentejo region, in Southern Portugal, is thriving at
the moment. Another in a long line of new (to me at least) producers
from this region is Monte Novo e Figueirinha, and these three wines,
from the warm 2003 vintage, impressed me.
Herdade das Fontes Branco 2003 Alentejo
Bright, forward lemony fresh nose. The palate is bright and crisp.
Very clean and fresh, this is a delicious versatile white wine. Very
good+ 87/100
Herdade das Fontes 2003 Alentejo
Overtly fruity, bright nose with ripe raspberry and blackberry jam
character. Very accessible and quite more-ish. The palate is rich and
fat with lovely purity of fruit. Ripe, intense and quite delicious.
Fruit dominate. Very good/excellent 90/100
Fonte Mouro Branco 2003
A varietal Antao Vaz. Good yellow colour. Lovely intense, savoury
nose with a waxy edge to the intensely herby, nutty fruit. The palate
is fruity and intense but with a lovely savoury, nutty character to
it. There’s quite a bit of oak but it works really well. Very
good/excellent 90/100
