This Jura domaine was founded in the early 1960s and is
now run by Bénédicte et Stéphane Tissot (pictured). It’s
biodynamic, certified by Demeter. The domaine now consists of 32
hectares of vines in the Arbois and Côtes de Jura appellations, with
parcels in some of the best sites. Perhaps because of the
implementation of biodynamie, work here is labour intensive: there are
15 full time employees. Use of sulfur dioxide is minimized.
So much for the details. What about the wines? In
brief, they are excellent. Full of personality and character, these
are the sorts of wines that keep me excited about the job I do, not
because they are the world’s greatest ever wines, but rather because
they are authentic and different.
Tissot Arbois Chardonnay La Mailloche 2004 Jura,
France
Very bright, complex fruity nose is quite Burgundian. Very fine.
The palate is rich and complex with nutty fruit and a bready toasty
edge. Sophisticated. Very good/excellent 91/100
Tissot Arbois Traminer 2004 Jura, France
Rich, broad, classy grape and lychee nose is melony and broad.
This leads to a plump, rich palate which is clean and fresh, and shows
low acidity. Dry but exuberantly fruity. Very good/excellent 90/100
Tissot Arbois Savagnin 2002 Jura, France
Lovely fresh, nutty, fruity, sherryish nose is quite complex,
light and perfumed. The palate is bright, fruity and open with nice
complexity from the flor. Finishes salty and tangy. Not for everyone,
but I like it. Very good/excellent 93/100
Tissot Spirale-Passrillage de Raisins sur Paille
2003 Jura, France
Deep intense nose of raisins, herbs, tea leaf and apricot. The
palate is super-concentrated and viscous with luscious sweet, syrupy,
raisiny fruit. Low acid, intense and very sweet. Very good/excellent
90/100
