Oddbins clearance sale: my tips
High street merchant-seeking-a-buyer Oddbins is having a summer clearout sale. There’s some good stuff to be had at attractive discounts, although the exact range stocked will vary from branch to branch.

I won’t bore you with an exhaustive list (most, but not all of the items on sale can be seen at www.oddbins.com), but here are my top tips. Firstly, the wines of Erich and Walter Polz, from Styria in Austria, are all reduced by £2. I’ve tried all of these, and this is a producer I’m very impressed by. Take your pick from the Weissburgunder (now £5.99), Grauburgunder (£5.99) or Chardonnay (£7.99): they are all delicious, mineralic, spicy whites with plenty of character and flavour. Unmissable bargains in my book.

I was bowled over by the wines of Vergelegen (South Africa) when I tasted them at the Decanter rising stars fine wine encounter, and the good news is that Oddbins are discounting them all by £2. Definitely worth a try, especially the Merlot and the flagship wine ‘The Vergelegen’.

I was also tempted by the £4 off the 1997 Petaluma Cabernet Merlot, which is a powerful but elegant premium wine from Coonawarra in South Australia. Other bargains include some substantially discounted Burgundies, although I haven’t tried these. Happy shopping…
