An icon a day: Jaboulet La Chapelle 1978

Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle 1978 Northern Rhône, France
This 1978 is a legendary northern Rhône wine, and so tasting it knowing what it was made being objective quite hard. But fortunately the wine did not disappoint. A relatively pale colour, it has a complex nose of red fruits, undergrowth and spice, with a hint of medicine and some subtle floral notes. Almost Burgundian in style, weight and elegance. The palate is sublimely elegant with soft, complex cherry fruit, spice, herbs, fine tannins and some mineral notes. It's just so, so elegant with amazing length and an eternal finish. A really beautiful wine, approaching perfection. As with all wines of this age, there will be considerable bottle variation; this is clearly a very good bottle. 98/100 (Tasted at The Sampler)

Well said Keith - that guy is such a loser...

You can call me what you like, but the fact is that Mr Prothero has a financial interest in the company, so it's rather pointless him coming on here and praising a business he has a vested interest in.

His comments on The Sampler are utterly worthless.

Keith's opinions are not worthless. But they are necessarily biased - both in a good way; 'puts his money where his mouth his' and potentially negatively in that those of us who didnt know of his interest in 'The Sampler' may be slightly influenced to approve of it. Interesting sideline to the long debate on Jamie's thread on ethics of 'criticism' in general. A) General agreement on the thread is that the blogger (upon whom us commenters comment), should disclose financial interest or benefit, so we can evaluate any influence on our views. B) Does this extend to comments? I have valued many of Keith's comments over the last 6 years of me logging on here - did I know of his financial interest in 'THe Sampler' - no. Would his enthusiasm cause me to visit (because I generally agree with his taste, views etc)- yes; would I have liked to know of his financial interest in evaluating this - mmmmm; probably. Does this matter as it's not his blog?; does he have a duty to disclose (moral, ethical not legal) - possibly. would that lead us to an ever diminishing 'health and safety can't do anything mentality' - maybe. Would the web be the worse for 5 lines of disclosure before any comments - yes. Should we just be grown ups and take our own view on opinions (with a healthy degree of scepticism) - most definitely.

So - I would have liked to know - 'I am an investor in it, but IMHO the Sampler rocks'; but I'm an adult and can make my own opinions.

He can do what he likes.

I'm just pointing out that his comments carry no credence whatsoever, as it's in his interests to big up a business he has risked money on. He's hardly going to slag it off, is he?

And to the other Anonymous person - I'm hardly a "loser" because I've revealed a FACT, idiot.

And as I only invested in the truly brilliant Sampler and its outstanding talented team,a few months ago, then my views on this business in the past have not been biased.
By the way I am also an investor in Bid For Wine,Mullineux Family Wines and Canteen restaurants but most of my time is spent on the charity Pebbles Project,as I am UK Director responsible for fund raising .www.pebblesproject.co.za
What do you do My Anonymous?

I'd just like to point out that this fellow claiming to be Keith Prothero may not even be Keith Prothero. so maybe his view is worth something (but not much!).

This "Anonymous" loser who is also an idiot has a long history of slagging people off on this site at every conceivable opportunity. It is SOOOOO obvious that he just likes slagging off Jamie and, in this case Keith, at every opportunity. What a sad person he is.

Er, you're anonymous too, though!

Dear David T - that's irrelevant - I'm not criticising this person because they are "anonymous" but because of what they say. I confidently predict that this person's next message will be about "free speech" etc etc etc.....

Oh, I see.

Is there a bit of history between you two, then?

To be fair, Keith has a long history of promoting his various business interests (and Pebbles, of course!) on all manner of web fora - wine-pages, Jancis, Jamie's blog, to name just three. I guess all wannabe businessmen should take a leaf out of his book - oh, if only I were so thick-skinned!

But he's a nice guy, really - he must be, because he's bought wine from me before. ;-)) And, having broken bread (and of course drank wine) with him on several occasions, I can confirm his real persona as being nothing like his web persona.

That said, at least he doesn't post anonymously (yes, I know, that would defeat the object). It is a shame so many people on the web choose to hide behind their anonymity. There appear to be 2 serial "anonymous" posters on here and (unless they are one and the same and just fancy slagging each other off) perhaps at least one (if not both) should step out into the light.

I decided long ago to avoid saying (writing) anything on the Internet about or to someone that I wouldn't feel comfortable saying to their face. Keeps things civil that way, if you ask me.

Do not sell yourself short Leon. You are not too bad at promoting and recommending wines from Lanky-Rossi and why not ?
If you like them and sell them ,nothing wrong in my book.
To my knowledge I have never knowingly promoted something I did not actually think was bloody good.

Lay off Keith! He's pretty transparent, and he's well known (and valued) as a commentator here.

Oh, for goodness' sake, stop the ridiculous baiting. Or at least post with a (real) name.
