In the Douro

For the last few days I have been in the Douro, first of all staying at Taylor´s Quinta de Vargellas, and now at Noval. Harvest is coming to a close here; it has been an early vintage, with a very hot dry July and August. Winemakers are describing it as complicated. The weather for this week has been very hot and sunny.

Last night a group of us got in a lagar. It was tremendous fun treading grapes. I have so much to report on, but time is short, so it will all have to wait.

I was at Quinta Nova (not Noval)on the last day of August, and the winery staff had been recalled early because harvest needed to commence - the first time they had experienced an August harvest they were telling me. They have a very advantageous aspect, facing south, about 8km west of Pinhao on the north bank of the river

That last picture reminds me of a Portuguese wine I've recently heard of: agua pe ("foot water"). Has anyone had this? It's wine made from a second pressing, so I'm guessing it's not that great. I just wonder what it tastes like, alcohol content, etc.

Água-pé is a traditional alcoholic beverage of Portugal, with low alcohol content, resulting from the addition of water to the residue (or foot) of grapes. The drink is usually made for consumption in "magustos" and other traditional festivities of the period of autumn and winter (magusto is a party where groups of friends and families come together around a campfire where they roast chestnuts to eat)
