Video content: Pyramid Valley Vineyards, a remarkable wine venture in New Zealand's Canterbury region

This is a short film I shot while I was visiting Pyramid Valley Vineyards with owner Mike Weersing. Located in the Canterbury Hills of New Zealand's South Island, this is a remarkable project with Burgundian-style close-planted vineyards that are farmed biodynamically. The full write-up of the visit went live on the main site today - you can see it here. Even if you don't normally watch video content on the web, you really should see this! It's an incredible place.

What a great bit to find on your blog today! Mike Weersing is as eloquent about terroir as anyone I know. He's largely responsible for our DIRT SEARCH series at the Rational Denial Lab.

As you're probably aware, Mike is just set to release his first batch of home grown Pinot (his prior bottlings have been based on sourced grapes -- even if he meticulously managed the borrowed vineyards). I'm miles from neutral, but for me they are stunning. Given the vine age (6-7 years), they are unbelievable. Additionally, they are a strong argument for the importance of ungrafted vines for site-expressive wines (read your WFW piece on this, very informative, very well done).

Cheers!

And by the way... from the Anorak side of this piece which I just read: "Mike... had graduated from veterinary school in Georgia, and then realized that he needed to leave for Manhattan. ‘I didn’t want to be a rural boy’, he recalls."

It was Mike's college girlfriend who went to vet school in Georgia, though it's funny to think of Mike doing odd things with large beasts.

Mike grew up in Woodside, CA which is just north of Silicon Valley. And while it has many bucolic charms, it is hardly rural. Certainly so when set against Canterbury.

Otherwise an insightful write up. Glad to see Mike getting some of the positive press he richly deserves.

J David - thanks for your comments and corrections - I agree, these wines are stunning. And Mike filled me in on the details r.e. girlfriends, animals and georgia, so the article on the main site is now corrected.

Justin, thanks for the encouragement.
