Choosing the first dog, and wine for Obama

Silly but fun article on the BBC News site about one of the important choices facing Obama: which puppy to choose for his kids?

The favourite candidate breed seems to be a goldendoodle (retreiver/poodle cross), although labradoodle is also mentioned in the piece. If he can wait until December, our very own RTL should have some puppies coming - he can have one at a discounted rate.

We're not totally sure she's pregnant - they don't sell pregnancy tests for dogs in Boots - but her nipples have swollen. Fiona has been reading all about the whole puppy issue and she tells me that this is one of the signs.

I also got a press release yesterday from Kendall Jackson who say that they are sending Obama two cases of Vintners Reserve Chardonnay. That will make his day! It's not a bad wine, but there are plenty of others in the KJ portfolio that I'd rather have two cases of! (See my report on KJ's wines here). I quote from the release:
"A recent story in People Magazine profiling the family life of then-candidate, now President-elect, Barack Obama, mentioned that a bottle of Kendall-Jackson chardonnay sat on the Obama’s kitchen countertop. It now seems only fitting that the California winemaker send a few congratulatory cases of the brand to the incoming President for his new wine cellar on Pennsylvania Avenue. So the company is doing just that."

Like his economic policies, his choice of wine is a disaster too!

I suspect that he may no more "choose" his policies than "choose" his wine!

I guess if Sarah Palin ever gets in, it would be Wolf Blast President Selection...

Vinogirl would rather have gun-totin' Palin running the country!

Vinogirl clearly knows as little about economics as she does about wine. I am officially a wine snob. Like vinogirl, I used to believe that any wine that successful couldn't be good (as Gallo proves). However, after actually TASTING the Kendall-Jackson chardonnay, I can attest--as Robert Parker has--that it is wonderful. I enjoy the tartness of the citrus and the touch of butter. On the nose it has a good dose of oak, but the palate has a nice confluence of acid, fruit and oak to make this quite satisfactory. I'm also impressed by the lack of alcoholic bite. I suspect "vino"girl only drinks beer.

Anonymous, when you live in America and pay as much tax as I already pay then I will listen to your opinion. You are obviously not brave enough to name yourself or say where you live so to me you are a non-starter...ho hum.
As for chardonnay, I prefer those that have not gone through MLF. I personally do not like the diacetyl compound. As for your comment that I only drink beer...you obviously know even less about me than I originally suspected.
As for caring what some glib, inexperienced politician drinks, I really couldn't give a crap. But I do care about the economy and how if the US consumer has less expendable income, I may be out of a job and you won't be reading wine blogs.

There is a site called winedogs.com which shows pictures of dogs at wineries. Perhaps there is a dog at Kendall Jackson Obama could have at the same time as he gets his wine. A sort of get two cases and we'll throw in the puppy.

Jamie, please moderate the racists that gather whenever the President-Elect is mentioned. 'Monkey' is just offensive and clearly a troll.

Vinogirl- the economy has already tanked under Bush and his cronies, so why you choose to berate a man who has yet to take the reins is mystifying. I hope your wines are less bitter.

Says someone whose only details we know are that her online name is "vinogirl" and that she lives in the US.

Not exactly sharing your inside leg measurement, are you...

the moral of this rant is do not mix wine with politics it ruins the taste and elegance and you end up with vinegar.

It must be a very fine line jamie, but proves my point completely. The lefties are sensitive obout their chosen one but i understand that you need to keep your readers happy so im not offended but lets keep to the wine, people are less touchy about the colour of wine.

Monkey- a good way of spotting racists by spotting their racist activities, i.e. posting racist comments on a blog- ergo you are a racist.
That has nothing to do with 'left' or 'right'. President Bush appointed Condaleezza Rice and Colin Powell to positions of state, and he's a proven right wing idiot. But, though he probably hates poor people ( (c) Kanye West) even he put talent over skin colour.
Myself I'm a Stalinist, who thinks that setting quotas for mass murder based on the Daily Mail's subscription list is perfectly reasonable. But the sheer joy and pride that Mr Obama's election sparked in friends of West Indian and Asian background made me realise just how empowering it must feel when the world's most powerful man is as open to the same abuse they regularly endure from thick white people.
I do like wine though. Lots of it.

Steve you get all this from a comment when really you have no right to label me for you don't know me. Racist would insinuate that I hate all people of colour and yet this is not true, I enjoy the company of many diferent races. I do however dislike Muslims and this being a religion is different and I feel I have every right to dislike them as they do us, as Obama is most certainly a Muslim I dislike him too him being mixed race has nothing to do with it. Racist gets thrown about these days when people disagree or show dislike to people of colour. call me what you will I give respect to those show it.
Now im sure as most that we should concentrate on the subject of wine.
