A superb Malaga from Bodegas Bentomiz

Bentomiz is a new venture in Spain’s Malaga region, started by a Dutch couple Andre Both and Clara Verheij in 2003 (their website is here). This is a region that is undergoing something of a revival – another notable new Malaga is the one made by Jorge Ordonez (which I have blogged on here). I really liked this nicely packaged sweet wine, sealed with a Vino-Lok glass stopper. In the UK, it’s available from Indigo Wine, although I couldn’t find it on their website.

Bodegas Bentomiz Ariyanas Dulce 2007 Málaga, Spain
13% alcohol. A naturally sweet white from Moscatel of Alexandria. Sweet, spicy and warm. Grapey and bold with lovely pure honeydew melon and sweet grape fruit character, finishing spicy. Luscious and richly textured with nice fresh acidity. Great balance here. 92/100

  1. Jamie, we have been selling this for over 12 months so not sure why we don’t come up on searches! I guess it’s because we are not Majestic!

  2. Bentomiz (I think!) also do a lovely dry high-altitude Moscatel, which I bought in Ronda last year. Very classy stuff.

  3. MarkT, we also have the Ariyanas Seco Sobre Lias (the dry moscatel to which you refer) and their equally lovely Tinto (a blend of local variety Rome, Petit Verdot and Tempranillo). Producers Clara and Andre were touring with me on Monday and so hopefully all of these terrific wines will be available in some of the best paces very soon.
    Cheers

  4. Jamie, as one of the most frequent visitors to the bodega, every year Andre and Clara produce another different, oustanding wine. The one you feature is their first, and there are more interesting wines from the same winery. I am really pleased that finally the Ariyanas are available for customers in the UK, as I have many friends that have been waiting for this moment. David

  5. Olly, I have looked on the Indigo site and you still do not feature Bodegas Bentomiz. Is this an oversight and it is coming soon? Where precisely can we buy the featured wines in the UK? David

  6. We have been to visit Bodegas Bentomiz on several occasions. They are very welcoming and each time we are learning more and more about wine. Their 2009 Tinto is wonderful.

  7. Having watched Andre & Clara develop their wines over the last few years, it will be great not to have to pack my hold baggage with bottles! They are a wonderful couple producing amazing wines in a beautiful area of Spain.

  8. Top individual, unusual, quality wines. The most recent, the new ‘David’ is in my opinion the best of all.

  9. I particularly like David and Naturalemente Dulce, I bought a bottle for my girlfriend back home with me.
