Northern Rhone series 2, Chapoutier Chante Alouette Hermitage Blanc 2007

Continuing my exploration of the Northern Rhone, wine number two is also a white Hermitage. It may seem an odd choice. Shouldn’t I have gone to Syrah? But I want to make a point. White Hermitage is serious stuff, but it doesn’t get the recognition it deserves.

Beautifully aromatic, this is a powerful white wine with rounded, honeyed peach and pear fruit backed up by subtle nuttiness. It’s fine and elegant, while at the same time being quite rich. Textured and broad with a lovely soft mouthfeel and a warm finish. A great expression of Marsanne. 94/100

  1. i had an awesome bottle of this with some turbot as a recent celebration. not only does the wine have the richness and honeyed stuff you pick out – it has enough freshness to be great with food. white rhone is my top choice in a posh restaurant – can do veal, poultry, sweatbreads etc.., fish and lots in between.
