Château Sénéjac 2009

Relatively affordable yet really good Bordeaux is a rare thing. There’s good quality cheap Bordeaux, and high quality expensive Bordeaux, but I don’t encounter much between the two. Is that just my perspective? Anyway, this is really good, and it’s not too expensive.

Château Sénéjac 2009 Haut Medoc, Bordeaux, France
With a hefty dose of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend (60%), this is an impressive cru Bourgeois claret. The elegant packaging is matched by the wine, which shows ripe, sweet blackberry and blackcurrant fruit with a nice fresh quality and a hint of some meaty savouriness lurking in the background. Ripe, dense, structured and quite serious, and opens out nicely with air. Proper Bordeaux. 91/100 (£16.99 The Co-op)

  1. I have some of this in store, as yet untried but highly rated by Mr Parker, so the prospect of buying at the Co-op for £17.00 was attractive.
As it happened I found myself close to one of their stores yesterday and remembering your note, thought to buy some more.
Unfortunately all their stock is 2008, not 2009, and while I’m sure it’s good, not the bargain the ’09 might have been.

As an aside however I’d like to add how much I’ve enjoyed your site over the years. Many is the time I thought to challenge your suggestions but that, surely, is what you intend.

I assume the year was an error on someone’s side

  2. Thanks for the nice comment. I suspect 2008 is still widely in store, but will be replaced with 2009 as it runs out. It’s a bit frustrating when this happens. I haven’t tried the 2008.

  3. The 2009 is fabulous and at £17.00 would be well priced but sadly last week in 3 London co ops it was all 2008 and the customer help line thinks that’s all they have.

  4. This week my local Co-op has a mix of the 2008 and 2009 for £12.99. Picked out all the 2009, now that is a bargain.
