A serious Kiwi Riesling: Framingham F-Series

Framingham, who I’ve reviewed before here, are one of New Zealand’s most underrated producers, I reckon. All their wines are good, but it’s Riesling for which they are best known. This is their top Riesling, and it’s pretty serious. It’s the oldest vines on the estate (this is Marlborough, so they’ll be 30 years old maximum!), hand harvested and whole bunch pressed with no clarification.

Framingham F-Series Old Vine Riesling 2009 Marlborough, New Zealand
Real concentration here: dense, minerally, a little toasty with some citrus freshness but also herb and apricot depth, as well as crystalline pear fruit notes. Real depth and intensity, and lots of potential for further development. 93/100 (UK agent Les Caves de Pyrene)

If I lived within reach of Les Caves de Pyrene, I’d definitely be curious to try this wine. Sounds brilliant, a New World oldish vines Riesling from an experienced producer. I don’t suppose it particularly cheap, I’m wondering how German or Austrian competition would stack up at the same price.

I’m all for tradition, but I can’t help thinking that a German or Austrian price equivalent would be labelled and marketed much more confusingly.

    Jamie, Dry, dryish or sweet?

The F-S Riesling has 9g/l residual. Tastes dry.

I like the label design, glad it also tastes good!

Yes, a lot of work goes into the wine. The grapes are organically grown and (late) harvested in tries. Wild yeast ferment, no sulphur to the must, racked to old barrels and vats -and a lot more besides. It is very vinous, really complex and quite different to Andrew’s more ethereal Germanic Rieslings.
