Just back from Vintner’s Hall in London, where tonight saw the 50th birthday celebration of Laithwaites/Direct Wines winemaker Jean-Marc Sauboua.
The quality of the turn-out showed just how highly people think of Jean-Marc. It was a lovely evening with a really good atmosphere and some nice wines. Wine of the night? Haut Brion 1988. Just beautiful.
Chateau Haut Brion 1998 1er Grand Cru Classe Graves, Bordeaux
Lovely elegant sweet, warm spicy nose with some notes of tar. The palate is fresh and elegant with lovely cherry and plum fruit and notes of minerals and spice. Lively, relatively youthful and taut, with lovely freshness. 95/100

Must have been a great evening. Looks like there’s something ‘Poltergeisty’ going on in the Chandeliers (also they look like LED’s which is commendable) – perhaps winemakers of yesteryear making a ‘spiritual’ appearance !?
