Nice way to wind down from a game of football. Proper Soave! It’s from Pieropan, and it’s the single vineyard Calvarino bottling. Soils are volcanic, with vines trained in a traditional Veronese pergola. Yields of 60 hl/ha are quite generous, but the wine doesn’t lack intensity. It’s fermented and aged in glass-lined cement tanks, with extended lees contact.
Pieropan Soave Classico Calvarino 2008 Veneto, Italy
12.5% alcohol. 70% Garganega, 30% Trebbiano di Soave. Soave with personality. Quite a full yellow colour, this wine is concentrated with flavours of pear, citrus, citrus pith and nuts. It has quite a bold character to it: there’s plenty of flavour, as well as nice freshness and a bit of grip. Good acidity and bone dry. A useful food wine. 90/100

Hi Jamie
Great wine and as you said proper Soave! Too many producers happy to pick early and crop even higher to produce dilute dross, the likes of Pieropan, Inama, Pra etc fly the flag for quality, food friendly wines – Pieropan’s ‘La Rocca’ gets most of the plaudits, but the Calvarino for the money is an excellent buy.
Nah! Still like Inama better.
I vote Inama too- the single vineyard 2008 I drank while listening live to the London riots mere metres away was the best white I’ve had all year, seriously Burgundian and a snip too at around thirteen quid.
