Some pictures from Châteauneuf du Pape

There’s something great about visiting wine regions. On Thursday and Friday I was in Châteauneuf du Pape, in France’s Southern Rhône. It’s an interesting region with four distinctive terroirs, including the famous galets roulés (big pebbles over clay soils) which account for around 60% of the appellation. The vines are trained as gobelets (bush vines), with the exception of Syrah which typically has a simple trellis system, as do the white varieties (just 5% of the appellation).

Châteauneuf is all about Grenache, although 13 different varieties are permitted in the red version. Grenache is capable of real elegance and charm, but it doesn’t always achieve this – some people make the mistake of trying to make big, rich, sweet, oaky wines here, which is a shame. Here are a few pictures from my quick trip.

  1. Great blog and nice photo of Châteauneufs wine stocks. I will follow reading your blog. I live 40min away and discover some good ones to only 14euro. I will try to remember the name 🙂
