The puppies have arrived, and we're exhausted
Tonight we played midwife to RTL, as she finally delivered her puppies. First one arrived at 8.15 pm, last one just before midnight. Eight in all, which is far more than we'd expected. And all alive and seemingly healthy.
It's an amazing experience to witness a relatively large mammal give birth. As the first one slid out, encased in its amniotic sac, Fiona was convinced it was dead. But RTL gave it a few licks, chewed off the umbilical cord, gave it a few more licks and it promptly attached itself to a nipple and began feeding.
All but one came out head first, and even the seventh, which decided to enter the world with its rear feet and tail to the fore, didn't cause too many problems.
I'm going to retire to bed soon. I just hope that they're all alive tomorrow morning. I'll probably still be slightly traumatized - but still in awe, too.

You aint seen nothing, wait till they start chewing the corks out of those bottles of Latour you got stashed......
Congratulations Jamie, but your public does expect a tasting note or two.
Surely there was time between pups to pull the odd cork :-)
I did have a few slugs of a monster amarone (Stefano Accordini Acinatico 2005), but we had to make sure we were still fit for driving if we had a crisis.
Over the years my Gordons have delivered nine litters at the house and the entire process never ceases to amaze me. The next couple weeks will be easy and then when they start walking it will be like trying to herd cats.
Good luck to you, Fiona and especially RTL (though I suspect she will cope with it better than you and Fiona).
Congratulations!!!!
I know how special it is to be the witness of such moments :)
Make sure you open a nice bottle or two...i believe a nice Dão always goes well with newborn puppies :)
