Physics - sexy? Who'd have thought it.
As a scientist I think all this coverage of the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) is really great. It's good for science to be in the news, because science is a good thing. But as a biologist with embarrasingly little understanding of particle physics, I have to admit to finding some of the concepts involved a bit mind-blowing and rather daunting. [But then I find looking at the stars and thinking about the distances and galaxies and light years a bit too much for my tiny brain to take in.] There's a good introduction to the LHC and what it does on the BBC news site. Pictured is Google's logo for the day. Nice one.

Quite agree Jamie, the LHC is an astounding achievement and a superb example of what humans can achieve when they cooperate, hopefully an inspiration for the next generation.
The BBC site is very good and explains a lot of the basics but I recommend you steer clear of the comments section though, it seems to be inhabited by a combination of religious nutters and people who would rather spend the money on more episodes of "big brother"!
Steve - good point - the scientific venture is the best example of human cooperation that I know of. I miss not being involved in science on a day to day basis.
