In Plymouth

After returning from Bordeaux, I was off on travels again. This time, it was with the family, down to the West country to visit my brother Arthur and his family in Plymouth. It was a lovely weekend. On Saturday we crossed on the Torpoint ferry and hit Tregantle beach in Cornwall. It was beautiful. RTL, in particular, loves beaches, and must have run about 20 miles up and down the sands, stopping to bathe in the rockpools and to chase other canines. While we were there we picked some moules which we later cooked for tea, along with a couple of sea bass (which we didn't catch...). To top it all, City beat Newcastle 3-1 and are now third.

OK, I was wrong - Elano is something else and quite possibly in the same league as Fabregas.

I'm sorry, but I've just put some money on City to finish in the top 6. If that's not enough of a curse to send them tumbling, nothing will be.

But if they do end up in the top 6, I'll spend the winnings on something nice and you can come round to Canteen and share it...

Well I have just bet that City will not finish in the top 6,so maybe I should make the same offer that Alex has.
Either way Jamie,you cannot lose!!

Alex, that's very big of you to admit you were wrong - Elano is a really good player - as good as anyone I've seen in a City shirt. Thanks for the offer!

Keith, your offer is also appreciated!

Elano as good as Fabregas? No chance. He goes missing far too often. Although he is a great player. This goal, especially was as good as I've seen this year

I didn't say he was as good as Fabregas, merely in the same league (just as Arsenal and Derby are!). I guess I've only seen TV highlights from a couple of performances. It was his passing that impressed me more than the goal itself.

But what a miss from Fabregas this evening!

It's hard to assess the performance of individuals accurately in football. But I watch quite a bit, and having seen a bit of Elano, he seems to be there among the best of them - I think Sven's genius is in realizing that to get the best out of a player like this, you have to sacrifice a striker and rely on the midfield chipping in with a lot of goals, in order to give him freedom to perform. City's previous midfield geniuses - Kinkladze, Berkovic and Bernabia - suffered from having a central midfield slot that required them to do a lot of work that they weren't very good at. I think, at the highest level, 4-4-2 may be dead unless you have midfield players of rare genius who are creative and also excellent defensively.
