Perth and Western Australia

I've always felt a bit guilty travelling to nice places and leaving my family behind. So I decided that on my next trip, Singapore and Western Australia in mid-April, we should all go.

Singapore I know well, but this will be my first visit to Western Australia. Has anyone got any tips on places to stay, things to see and experiences to enjoy? So far, our itinerary is completely blank, and while the likes of Lonely Planet are useful, they are not as good as personal recommendations.

Boys are aged 9 and 10. They like outdoors, nature and physical activity, but youngest son has vowed that he won't go in the water because he's terrified of sharks. We'll soon cure him of this!

Hi Jamie,

Check out my blog at www.thisperthlife.com for info on Perth and the surrounds including Margaret River wine country. Choose categories tourism and food & drink for most of the info you are looking for.

Also, tell your son not to worry about sharks as we have a shark spotter plane here in Perth that has proved very effective so far!

Hope you enjoy WA and if you need any further info then drop me a line at claire@thisperthlife.com

Cheers, Claire

G'day Jamie....

Good to hear to you have finally decided to come to Western Australia. Coming from a winemaking family, I rekon we make some pretty decent wines here. Of course you must visit the Margaret River region and the taste the wines of Cullen, Vasse Felix etc. Our winery is in the Swan Valley region, which is only 40 mins from Perth. The Swan is interesting as it is Western Australia's oldest wine region. It produces some of Australia's greatest fortified wines as well as some interesting and unusual styles made from Viognier, Chenin Blanc, Verdelho Shiraz etc. We also tend to be a bit more relaxed than Margaret River, so its a good place for the kids. Besides, if you make it down here I can show you round a bit...
peace

Jamie,

Once you have seen one City, you have seen them all. . .

I think the best thing to do - is hire a car and head for the South West - beach / forest / and wine.

Margaret River is a magnet - (for me at least). I am sure you will know which wineries to visit.

Dunsborough and Bunker Bay is a terrific, if expensive place to stay.

Rotnest - is Perth's version of a Greek island - good to relax and unwind.

Email me if you need someone to share a drink with!

Or perhaps a Great White might?

I'm sure you'll do Margaret River, and Rick Einstein's (aka TORB!) online travels are well worth a read.

Perth itself is a pretty quiet town but has some good hotspots. I would also ensure you spend some time exploring Fremantle - just to the south of Perth. It's a great little town that can all be done on foot and which exhibits more diversity and 'edge' than the rest of the area.
