Heida: a brilliant Savignin from Switzerland

Swiss wines rock. I tasted a lot on a visit in 2006 (write up here) and was really impressed. Of course, in the UK we don’t see all that many of them. But they can be quite serious.

This is a superb Swiss white, part of the Chandra Kurt collection from Provins Valais. Chandra is a leading Swiss wine journalist who I’ve met a few times, and she’s been involved in some special bottlings by this producer from the Valais region.

Heida Collection Chandra Kurt 2009 Valais, Switzerland
14% alcohol. This is from the Savagnin Blanc variety, grown at an altitude of 1150 metres. Nicely aromatic with fresh, grapey, melony fruit as well as subtle spiciness. The palate has beautiful poise and texture. Rich, spicy and mineral edged, showing some melon fruit but with a lovely richness.  It’s quite richly textured, like an Alsace Gewurztraminer but without the wild Gewurz character. Complex and beguiling with a long finish. 92/100
