Good, affordable Gruner Veltliner

I’m a real fan of Grüner Veltliner, one of my favourite white grape varieties. This is a good, affordable example that I bought (yes, shock, horror, wine writer actually buys a wine) from Waitrose on Saturday. Money well spent, I reckon – one that I would buy again.

Domäne Wachau Grüner Veltliner Terraces 2009 Wachau, Austria
12% alcohol. A fresh, citrussy interpretation of GV with a trademark hint of white pepper on the nose and crisp, persistent fruity flavours on the palate. A taut, dry style with lovely purity. Very impressive for the price. 88/100 (£7.99 Waitrose)

  1. So glad to see you enjoyed this wine! I’ve tried it over here in the US, but the label was, of course, different. A Gruner of definite quality, especially for the price.

    Will you be attending the EWBC in October in Austria?

  2. Hi Jamie,
    Had this exact wine when on 10th anniversary in Copenhagen last September. I had skate with a mussel foam and every mouthful of this heavenly combo made my tongue sing ! Although it has to be said that Copenhagen is ‘tres expensive’ and at said restaurant each (125ml) glass cost about what you paid for the bottle in Waitrose !

  3. une telle description bien dans le discours que vous avez rendu grâce pour
    si tout le monde est comme toi sont super grand obtenir!

  4. not sure if you actually get these messages retrospectively – maybe there are hundreds of messages you never see that are conscribed to the history of latter day blogs. Two quick things ;
    1) Love the functionality of country click – wanted to check Austria and hey presto one click and I got the desired blog.
    2) Based on the above/personal memories I bought a bottle in Waitrose last Friday (it’s on £2 off at present by the way – £5.99)

  5. I have some of their Smargd Trocken 2006 and it is really drinking well right now, albeit with some rather grand bottle variation.. maybe that is why I bought it on the discount.
