It’s not often I recommend French wines stocked by UK supermarkets, because the buying is rarely that inspired. Most decent French stuff simply doesn’t fit with the requirements of the multiple grocers. But here are two really nice expressions of Northern Rhone Syrah from Sainsbury’s.
Sainsbury’s Taste The Difference Saint-Joseph 2009 Northern Rhone, France
From Chapoutier, 13% alcohol. Lovely black cherry and blackberry fruit with a hint of violet, as well as some pepperiness. Very fresh with a tart finish. Good acidity and a hint of tannic grip, this is extremely drinkable. 89/100 (£12.99 Sainsbury’s)
Sainsbury’s Taste The Difference Crozes-Hermitage 2009 Northern Rhone, France
From Chaupoutier, 13% alcohol. Fresh, lively, subtly peppery dark cherry and plum fruit. Quite rounded and elegant with lovely primary fruit and a hint of nice greenness. Peppery, meaty savoury edge. Delicious. 89/100 (£8.49 Sainsbury’s)
Interesting that these are both 13% alcohol – as I get older I find I prefer 13 – 13.5% wines to traditional rhones with 14% or more.
Of course, being French, they’re allowed to be somewhat economical with the truth….
Interesting that there is such a price difference between 2 what I would think very similar wines..
You should try their 2010 Cotes du Rhone Villages as well..its cracking. A good follow on to the 2009 vintage.
