Northern Rhone series 5, Jamet Cote Rotie 1999

This wine is a favourite of mine, and I’ve drunk it on perhaps a dozen occasions. Well stored bottles, like this one, are really singing now, but there’s no hurry to drink it up. We enjoyed it last night at a family gathering at my brother-in-law’s place. He had the wisdom to buy two cases of it when it was released on my recommendation. This is a great example of Cote Rotie, made in a modern style but still retaining a sense of place.

Jamet Côte Rôtie 1999 Northern Rhône, France
Intense, meaty and fresh with olives, black cherries, plums and blackberry notes. This is still fruit driven, but has lovely complexity and tension, with savoury meaty, olive-like notes adding a savoury dimension. Vibrant and intense with good tannic structure and real typicity. A joy to drink. 96/100

  1. Have you tasted the 2004 yet? Had it at a tasting here in South Africa the other day and would like to know your opinion? Thanks for your brilliant blog!

  2. Am I right in thinking this is ~£160 a bottle (plus tax)

It had better be 96/100 for that price – I’ll have to imagine how good it is 😉 !!

  3. tasted and brought this from the domaine back in 2002, can’t remember what other vintages but it was a great experience. I was allowed to buy three bottles, problem is my wife knows the current price of these, so I can’t see us drinking them without an unpleasant discussion on the value of wine.

  4. Wow, is it that expensive? I paid 240 per case back in 2001. I hate the way wine prices have crept up so much of late.

    Haven’t tried the 2004.

  5. I think it got a high Parker score and went crazy. More recent vintages aren’t so silly.
