A pair of Mad Dogs – Shiraz and Sangiovese from the Barossa

I first reviewed the Mad Dog wines, made by Barossa grape grower Matthew Munzberg, some time ago. Here I’m taking a look at the latest releases, which are just fantastic.

This is the first ever convincing Barossa interpretation of Sangiovese I’ve encountered, and it was paired with a much improved Shiraz from the 2007 vintage. In the UK, the wines are imported by Corney & Barrow, who will have the Shiraz, but not the Sangiovese (produced in too small quantities).

Mad Dog Sangiovese 2009 Barossa
14.5% alcohol. From a trial planting where the vines are now mature. Very attractive sweet open berry and cherry fruit nose with some lovely savoury spiciness and subtly herbal overtones. The palate has sweet berry fruit with a pleasant savoury spiciness. The overriding theme is delicious fresh sweet fruit, underpinned by grainy tannins. Very stylish. 91/100

Mad Dog Shiraz 2007 Barossa
13.5% alcohol. Rich, bold, lush, intense and spicy, this is a really rich expression of Shiraz but also has lovely floral overtones, with meat and spice savouriness. The dark plum and blackberry fruit shows nice definition. Rich and delicious, this is a superb Barossa Shiraz. 93/100

  1. I think you normally do but it would be good if you could give an indication of price to go with score for perspective.

    Many thanks
