Here’s another new English sparkling wine. It’s cleverly branded, and the winemaker is Dermot Sugrue, a specialist sparkling winemaker who worked for Nyetimber for three years. Dermot is now based at Wiston Estate and does contract winemaking for a number of operations. I like this wine a lot, although it’s still pretty primary. Perhaps taking an ‘NV’ approach, using some reserve base wines to add complexity to younger sparkling wines, might be something for UK sparkling wine producers to think about.
Digby Fine English Reserve Brut 2009 England
12% alcohol, disgorged September 2012. Lovely fruity nose: appley with some pear and citrus. The palate is appley, rounded and lively, with good acidity. Very fruity, direct style, but with good balance. An attractive, pure sparkling wine of real appeal. 89/100

Suzy DIGBY!
Cleverly branded? In what sense?
In the sense that they have a proper coherent brand strategy and house style – while it might not be to everyone’s taste, it is consistent across all their communication and packaging. And there’s a point of difference here. They are trying to capture Englishness in a quirky, fun way.
Suzy (great surname!), you can grab a bottle at, for example, Selfridges, Wine Pantry, Vagabond Wines, or try a glass at Charlotte’s Bistro (Chiswick), or at Gillray’s (County Hall London Marriott).
