OK, promised yesterday, more notes on great Portuguese wines for under 10 Euros. I was delighted to find that two of my favourite Vinho Verdes fitted into this category. These are benchmark examples of how good the Alvarinho and Loureiro grape varieties can be. It’s such a shame that Vinho Verde has such a bad reputation in the UK.
Soalheiro Alvarinho 2012 Vinho Verde, Portugal
12.5% alcohol. Beautifully lively and precise with a tiny hint of spritz, lovely pear, apple and citrus fruit and nice weight, with a hint of melony sweetness. So lively, fruity and pure. 90/100
Quinta do Ameal Loureiro 2012 Vinho Verde, Portugal
11% alcohol
Lively, citrusy and precise with some melony fruitiness. It is very delicate and pure with a hint of richness and great acidity. 90/100
I have very little experience of Portuguese wines, they don’t get much shelf space here in Ireland.
Heading to Lisbon next month though so hope to remedy that!
Jamie,
If you need advice on restaurants let me know that i will give you two or three names.
Best Regards,
Joao
Warren – O’Brien’s have a decent range as do Wicklow Wines. Also try Classic Drinks and Wine Alliance (both in Cork) who distribute good ranges into the off-trade. For both Wicklow Wines and Wine Alliance, Portugal is one of their specialities. Hope this helps
