Looking across to Porto from Vila Nova

Did some staff training for London restaurant Hakkasan today. The subject? Sherry and Port. It was a fun session, and we finished with the 1985 Taylor, a Port that’s now peaking, showing lovely complex, mature flavours, as well as retaining some fruit and tannin. Lovely stuff.

In preparation I came across this nice picture of Porto, viewed from Vila Nova de Gaia. It was taken in September when I visited the Douro, after a day spent in the city. In the foreground you can see the long red-tiled roofs of some of the Port lodges, which dominate Vila Nova.

  1. Will be interesting to see how this changes over the coming years as the Vila Nova development scheme moves ahead! Haven’t been out there since the Yeatman Hotel was born onto the VN skyline. What did you think when you visited it?

  2. I don’t like the sound of that “Vila Nova development scheme” at all!!! I’ve been several times in the past (not recently tho’) and loved both Porto and VNdG just like they were!!!
