Fun on the wedding day

We had a great time yesterday at my sister’s place, where a sizeable contingent of family gathered to celebrate the royal wedding. I was initially not intending to watch the spectacle, but it turned out to be quite gripping – a day of real emotion.

We celebrated with Champagne – beginning with a magnum of Drappier NV, and then moving onto a couple of magnums of the rich, toasty Drappier Millesime Exception 2000, which was drinking perfectly. In a totally different style was the Chapel Down Vintage Reserve Brut from England, which was very fruity and pure.

The cousins really enjoy being together. Mine, as the oldest, usually behave quite well and get stuck in with the younger kids. It’s great to see.

In the evening we had some more nice wines, beginning with a run of Burgundies. Highlights were the fresh, slightly reductive Jobard Meursault en Barre 2005 and the creamy Bruno Clair Corton Charlemagne 2004.

Then, two very lovely, fresh, expressive red wines. Cos’ Frappato 2008 from Sicily is a favourite: so bright and elegant. Pure fun. And Jamet’s Cotes du Rhone 2008 is the essence of young cool-climate Syrah, with a haunting peppery brightness and red cherry fruit.
