New Zealand reds are fast becoming their most exciting wines. Here’s a good one from a producer I visited a few years back, and it’s not overly expensive, at just over a tenner. And it’s lovely.
Esk Valley Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon Malbec 2008 Gimblett Gravels, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand
A majestic expression of the Bordeaux red varieties. Lovely smooth aromatic nose of violets, black cherry and blackcurrant with subtle spicy notes. The palate is supple and elegant with ripe dark fruits and some refined gravelly structure, as well as seamless oak integration. Almost perfectly balanced. 93/100

1 Comment on Esk Valley: a lovely Bordeaux blend from New Zealand
Hi Jamie, agree with you sentiments entirely! The above wine is only their middle tier blend! The Reserve is absolutely magic and can be bought in NZ for around $40.Try their Syrah also…seriously punches well above its weight. I had the privilege of attending a vertical tasting of Esk Valleys premium offering “The Terraces” last month at the winery. This is a blend of Malbec Cabernet Franc and Merlot all sourced from the Terraces Vineyard above the winery. To taste 7 different vintages in one sitting was a memory I shall treasure for may years!
