New Zealand reds are exciting. They’re getting better all the time. I caught this Trinity Hill Syrah – a wine I actually bought with my own money (shock!) – in a good place. It held up well over two days, although it’s a miracle that any was left for day 2.
Trinity Hill Syrah Gimblett Gravels 2006 Hawkes Bay, New Zealand
13.5% alcohol. Some Viognier in the blend here, and it shows a bit, although not too much. Very fine, floral and aromatic with a white pepper edge to the smooth cherry and apricot fruit. Beguiling, haunting and beautiful. The palate is fresh and smooth textured with sweet, supple cherry fruit and a peppery freshness. There’s a hint of clove, too. Elegant, pure and fine. 94/100

Yes, I agree Trinity Hill do make a good Syrah. Their flagship ‘Homage’ wine is top-notch! Moreover, these Kiwi Syrah wines perfectly demonstrate the wonderful Gimblett Gravels terroir.
Since you paid for it not revealing the place of purchase seems perverse.
Richard, you can buy this online from New Zealand House of Wine for £18. Trinity Hill rarely, if ever, make a dud wine, and they are pioneering new varieties in Hawke’s Bay like arneis. To my mind, Trinity Hill and Craggy Range make much of the best Hawke’s Bay wine, much of which is available in the UK.
