Gulfi’s delicious Cerasuolo di Vittoria

Gulfi is an organic winery in Sicily, specializing in local grape Nero d’Avola. I recently tried through their range, which is characterized by big, structured, burly expressions of this grape. Impressive as they were, I was rather taken by this wine: a 50/50 blend of Frappato and Nero d’Avola, from Sicily’s only DOCG – Cerasuolo di Vittoria. The Frappato brings freshness, acidity and drinkability to this wine, which shows a prettiness and lightness of touch that the other wines don’t have.

Gulfi Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG 2011 Sicily, Italy
13.5% alcohol, organic. Lovely supple, sweet, fresh cherry and berry fruit nose. It’s richer and more berryish than a Pinot Noir, but still so elegant and supple. The palate has lovely open, sweet cherry fruit. Pure fruit dominates but it is really fresh and bright, and very drinkable indeed. 90/100 (UK agent: Alliance Wine)
