Tired, now, after a great first day in South Africa. I landed this morning, had a quick refresh, then hit the road. Too tired to do proper write-ups now, so a few pictures will have to do.
First visit, the fabulous Waterkloof, with Werner Engelbrecht and farm manager Christiaan Loots. They are in the process of replacing their tractors with horses (they have six so far) and the wines are fabulous, including a brilliant 2009 Syrah and lovely 2011 Chenin Blanc.
Lunch was good here, too, at their high end restaurant with fabulous views.
Then it was off to Waterford, with Kevin Arnold. Some very stylish wines here, including the lush but expressive 2008 Kevin Arnold Shiraz and the ripe, complex 2004 The Gem. I was also really taken by the Library Collection Solera Chenin Blanc.
Finally, dinner at 96 Winery Road with Teresa Forrester and Anthony van Schalkwyk, including a delicous fillet on the bone and a 2009 Noble Late Harvest, although not together.

You lucky thing! The Cape is at it’s best in Feb/March, IMHO. How’s your pronuncition? “Van Schalkwyk” is a bugger for the English rooinek.
I look forward to you other reports and TNs.
Is that tree sculpture made out of old grape stakes?
