Fun in Singapore, with dinner at Immigrants and lots of nice wine

Gavin and YiXin

So I arrived in Singapore late afternoon and headed out of the airport to meet with YiXin, Jules, Gavin and Hsien Min, eager partners in crime when it comes to food and wine. We began at YiXin and Jules’ place, with a few wines along with a very nice piece of Comte.

Marc Ollivier Château-Thébaud Clos des Morines 2009 Muscadet Sevre et Maine, France
Should Muscadet be serious? This is quite a serious wine with freshness and also a nutty dimension, with herbs, almonds, some stony minerality and real depth. Quite lovely, and ageworthy too. 92/100

Huet Vouvray Petillant 2002 Loire, France
This was served blind, but it was clearly very high quality sparkling Chenin. Very rich, toasty and full with mineral and bold citrus notes. Apple, herb and citrus palate with some hay notes as well as toasty richness. A bit of grip, here: it’s almost structured, Fabulous. 93/100

Domaine Dupasquier Mondeuse 2009 Savoie, France
What a brilliant wine! Fresh, perfumed and really peppery with lovely bright cherry fruit. Grippy, lively, sappy and nicely precise, with a bit of sweetness to the fruit but also this lovely iodine, mineral and pepper savouriness. 94/100

Then we went off for some dinner at Immigrants (www.immigrants-gastrobar.com), which is a brilliant place, specializing in heritage Singapore dishes. This blends together Chinese, Eurasian, Indian, Malay and Peranakan cuisine, and the food comes in small plates, ideal for sharing. It’s a cuisine that is disappearing, in part because of the time needed for preparation. We ordered a couple of the wines that YiXin imports, and also had some wine that we’d brought along.

Domaine Clos d’Elu Terre! 2010 Vin de Pays du Val du Loire, France
A Sauvignon. Warm and a bit nutty with citrus and ripe apple fruit. Broad textured and rounded. A really interesting take on Sauvignon. 89/100

Clos Roche Blanche Touraine Cuvée Gamay 2010 Loire, France|
Fruity, fresh and pure with some pepper and meat complexity to the lovely black cherry and plum fruit. Quite a light, elegant style but there’s some complexity here, too. Very drinkable. 91/100

Eric Texier Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc 2007 Southern Rhone, France
Mainly Grenache Blanc, with some Bourboulenc, Ugni Blanc and Clairette. Textured, rich, nutty and bold with notes of vanilla and spice, as well as pear and peach fruit. Lovely depth of flavour here. 93/100

Clos Roche Blanche l’Arpent Rouge 2010 Touraine, Loire, France
A varietal Pineau d’Aunis. Fine, spicy and fresh with lovely red cherry fruit. Sappy, fine and a bit animal with good acidity. Lovely purity here: and this bottle had been open for a few days. 93/100
