This was the star wine in a star line-up at Tuesday’s lunch. Just thrillingly good.
Chateau d’Yquem 1986 Sauternes, Bordeaux, France
Powerful, spicy and intense with lovely flavours of marmalade, apricot, spice and citrus, as well as some sweet melon notes and a delicious creaminess. There’s also a hint of white pepper. This is tantalising. So spicy and profound. 97/100

Hi Jamie, sounds like a memorable lunch. How come you didn’t give this wine 100?
Understand the concept that there is no such thing as a ‘perfect wine’, hence the ideological stance against giving any 100 points ever, but agree in part with Chris above: why not 98 or 99 points?
It is recorded on Wine pages 5 years ago, I think, by Neal Martin that he rated the Mullineux Straw wine above this wine served at the same lunch at The Ledbury. So not the perfect wine.
well I was at the lunch, and for what it is worth, although it was certainly a memorable wine, it was not as good as the 42 or 50 Yquem that I have enjoyed in the last two years, and hence I think Jamie,s score is about right.
Touché Keith! (you lucky b*gger!)
