Great day out at the Oval yesterday, to watch the one day international between South Africa and England. I was with Justin Howard Sneyd of Laithwaites, and we were sitting on the first row of the OCS stand, which provided a great view, close to the action. The game was enhanced with some lovely wine. So, the hottest day of the year so far. A muggy 30 degrees, under a blue sky with just a hint of haze. And time for some wine trade cricket, against Royal Hampton Wick Cricket Club. It’s a beautiful ground, inside Bushy Park. I arrived just in time to take the field, after changing hurriedly, and [...] Great day today. It was Wine Trade vs Further Friars, down at Keevil in Wiltshire, on a perfect late summer’s day. The game was great – more on that later – and ended perfectly with Jasper Morris MW, one of the Friars, bringing out a magnum of Jaboulet’s Thalabert Croze Hermitage, in the 1985. We drank [...] Had a very enjoyable evening at the Oval, watching Surrey vs. Northants in the Clydesdale Bank 40 Over competition. It was the first time I’ve watched one of these day/night games where floodlights are used. It was a really good game of cricket. I was sitting with Roger Hamilton-Brown, father of the Surrey captain Rory, who [...] Spent the day playing cricket. Wine Trade vs. Hampshire Hogs, down at their beautiful ground in Warnford. Last year we beat them narrowly (report here). So would we repeat the result this year? They won the toss and batted first. The openers looked solid, one of them a young guy fresh from Harrow. They’d put up [...] On the way back from cricket. Several times a year I take a day off and spend it playing. Play is important for adults, just as it is for children.
