Prince Edward County, Ontario (12) Karlo Estates

In 2006 Richard Karlo and Sherry Martin planted the first vines at Karlo Estates, a property they’d bought the previous year. They planted a wide spectrum of varieties, focusing on Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Frontenac. They released their first wines in 2008 and built a winery in 2010. The vineyard area expanded to 14 acres (the property is 93 acres), but tragically Richard died in 2014.

Derek Barnett, winemaker at Karlo Estates

Winemaking is now in the hands of Derek Barnett, previously of Lailey in Niagara. In addition to the estate fruit, Karlo also buy in some fruit from growers in the county, as well as sourcing some from Niagara.
