The famous barn at Closson Chase

Deborah Paskus was a well known consulting winemaker when she established Closson Chase, one of the pioneering wineries in the region, along with some investors. A test acre was planted in Hillier in 1999, and in 2002 the century-old dairy barn that is now the symbol of the vineyard was renovated. First commercial vintage was 10 cases in 2004, and a new winery was commissioned in 2007. Paskus made some impressive wines, but the estate had a reputation for inconsistency.

Keith Tyers, Closson Chase

Since 2015 Keith Tyers has been winemaker, following Deborah’s retirement, and he’s making some impressive wines from these ideal vineyard soils, with a thin layer of loam and crumbled limestone over a fractured limestone base. Around 75% of the grapes come from their County vineyards, while the remaining quarter are sourced from Niagara.
