On the Riesling trail again

I've tasted a number of Rieslings recently. Here's one that really thrilled, that I'd rank up there with some of my top Riesling experiences. The slight downside is the cost. I'm guessing that most people are prepared to splash the cash for some wine styles (Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne) but not others (such as the Loire and Germany).

Willi Schaefer Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese Nr 14 2005 Mosel, Germany
This is a really fantastic Riesling. Intense, thrilling palate with wonderfully complex, almost spicy, limey fruit. Really good, precise acidity offsets the rich, sweet melony fruit. Concentrated, fresh and precise, with great balance. 94/100 (£21.60 Tanners)

20 quid is great value for a the produce of a world class winemaker, a historic vineyard in a fabulous year.

The '05s from the Mosel are generally brilliant.

Spending similar money in Burgundy often leads to disappointment.

But I find that "most people" wouldn't like it. I've had that precise wine myself and probably found it more "interesting" than "enjoyable" per se. One needs to get used to the style, I suppose.

I agree with both colman and alex. Great German riesling is comparatively great value for money and its many styles need to be explored thoroughly to 'get' the full range possible. I'm afraid that 'most people' have pre-concieved ideas about riesling, and most people's experience of this wonderful grape r from cheap mediocre stuff or from the drier less complex wines of Australia (nothing wrong with these but they are very different from German riesling). The word that always leaps to my mind when tasting good German riesling, at all its sweetness points, is 'thrilling'.

Alsation riesling is another story of course and it can be magnificent too.

Thanks for flying the flag for this wonderful wine, Jamie.
