So I continue in my noble quest to learn to love Nebbiolo (see my previous posts here and here). This time, I am turning to the Valtellina region, a 70 mile long valley running east to west on the Italian-Swiss border. The vineyards here are terraced, and the primary grape is Nebbiolo, known locally as Chiavennasca. It sounds a great place.
This wine is from leading producer Ar.Pe.Pe, named after the initials of Arturo Pelizzatti Perego, who founded the winery in 1984 by buying back some vineyard his father had sold, and which is now run by his children. They take quite a traditional approach, which seems to work very well.
The vineyards for this wine are at 350/400 m and it comes from 50+ year old vines, with the harvest date in late October. The wines are aged in 5000 litre barrels.
Ar.Pe.Pe. Rosso di Valtellina 2010 Italy
Pale cherry red colour. Textured, fresh, lively, spicy cherry fruit with some subtly earthy undertones. Some floral, tar and spice notes on the nose. A really well-integrated, harmonious Nebbiolo, despite the edges and high acidity. Really delicious. 92/100 (£21 Tutto Wines)
I am glad you like this one. I think I may have recommended it to you in your search
I know it’s a long name and hard to get right, but the correct spelling is:
Arturo (ok) Pelizzatti (two t’s) Perego (u->e)
Giberto, thanks for the correction, now changed in the text
Am learning about wines from the Valtellina region and Google search once again brought me to your site. Another great post, Jamie!
