There’s something great about visiting wine regions. On Thursday and Friday I was in\u00a0Ch\u00e2teauneuf du Pape, in France’s Southern Rh\u00f4ne. It’s an interesting region with four distinctive terroirs, including the famous galets roul\u00e9s (big pebbles over clay soils) which account for around 60% of the appellation. The vines are trained as gobelets (bush vines), with the exception of Syrah which typically has a simple trellis system, as do the white varieties (just 5% of the appellation).<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Ch\u00e2teauneuf is all about Grenache, although 13 different varieties are permitted in the red version. Grenache is capable of real elegance and charm, but it doesn’t always achieve this – some people make the mistake of trying to make big, rich, sweet, oaky wines here, which is a shame. Here are a few pictures from my quick trip.<\/p>\n
