Two varieties, in particular, have caught my attention. The elegant, Pinot Noir like Kadarka is my favourite, but following close behind is Kekfrankos, aka Blaufrankisch. This handsome pair of wines comes from Eger producer Grof Buttler, whose Chardonnay I reviewed a while back.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gr\u00f3f Buttler Egri Kadarka 2011 Hungary<\/strong><br \/>\n15% alcohol. Cherry red colour. Sweet, pure, ripe aromatics with a subtle hint of beetroot under\u00a0 the cherry fruit. The palate is supple, fresh and yet quite ripe showing good definition to the ripe cherry and raspberry fruit. Good definition here: it\u2019s a ripe expression of Kadarka, but the trademark freshness and elegance of this variety are evident. 90\/100<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gr\u00f3f Buttler Egri K\u00e9kfrankos 2011 Hungary<\/strong><br \/>\n14% alcohol. Fresh, well defined black cherry fruit nose with some hints of pepper and spice. Ripe with some lushness but still very fresh. The palate is supple and quite elegant with ripe, sweet, black cherry and blackberry fruit, good acidity, and some peppery, grippy structure. Sleek fruit but also some savoury, spicy elements.
